TC Safety Seminar
We need your help
As most of you already know, the club is hosting a Transport Canada safety seminar on Saturday September 30th. Planning for the event is progressing according to plan. Look for our ad in the upcoming issue of the COPA magazine. All that we need now is your help.
We need pretty much the entire club's help in putting this all together. The plan is to have a work party the Friday evening (September 29th) to prepare the hangar and get a head start on setting things up. We also need to give CMQ a bath that same afternoon. Then, on Saturday morning, we need about a
dozen volunteers for the following:
- Final set-up (0700 - 0800)
- Assist vendors in setting up their booths
(0730 - 0830)
- A/C marshallers (0800 - 0900)
- Shuttle van drivers & marshallers
(0800 - 0900)
- Greeters (0800 - 0900)
- Sale of lunch & raffle tickets (0800
- 0900)
- Staff club's membership booth (0800 - 0900)
Lunch will be a BBQ which will require 6 people:
- Cooks
- Sale of lunch & raffle tickets
- Clear tables
And finally, we need people at the end of the day:
- A/C marshallers (1530 - 1630)
- Shuttle van drivers & marshallers
(1530 - 1630)
- Hand out currency stickers (1530 - 1600)
- Take down tables & chairs (1630 -
1730)
- Clean-up (1630 - 1730)
As you can see, we need plenty of help. So, please pick a time; Friday afternoon, Saturday morning, lunch time or afternoon, and then send me an e-mail to events@bordenflyingclub.com
with the times that you plan on volunteering.
I look forward to seeing each and every one of you there. If you have any questions you can get hold of me at the e-mail address above

CMQ at Gathering of the Classics
By Paul Richardson
I thought it would be interesting and instructive to take CMQ to a fly-in, so on Saturday August 5, I fired up CMQ’s mighty 180 horse Lycoming and braved the long and perilous voyage all the way to Edenvale. It took me a whole 15 minutes to get there and about another 15-20 minutes to figure out how to land. A seemingly endless stream of aircraft, mostly ultra-light and classic birds were landing on runway 26. The Edenvale frequency (122.775) was busy with radio calls; you could tell an open cockpit because they were unintelligible, and unrelated chatter from a couple of pilots that were not even in the area (of course I could here them ok!). It was like trying to cross the 400 highway northbound on a long weekend. After touring around Wasaga beach to observe and kill some time, I saw an opening in the circuit, crossed overhead the runway and called left downwind for runway 26. I called base as I turned to descend, I then realized that about three ultralights were doing very long straight-in finals 500 feet below me, so I aborted my circuit and went out over towards Wasaga beach to sort things out. I waited until everyone was out of the way and finally managed to get in.
The Collingwood Classics was a large event and there were aircraft of several types that I have never seen before. I wandered around in the hot sun for a couple of hours, inspecting the array of technical marvels from the 30’s to the latest to come along. Although it was no Oshkosh, they did have a couple of airplanes I had never noticed anywhere else. I offer a couple of photos for your perusal.
Meyers OTW, only one of its type in Canada
Beautiful homebuilt Spitfire replica attracted lots of attention.
All through the event aircraft were landing taking off, most of the classics preferring to use the grass strip running parallel to the main paved runway. I met Fred Simpson, just as I was planning my escape through the gauntlet of classic and ultra-light aircraft in the circuit. He took the photo below.
CMQ and I were well baked after 2 hours!
